Letters discuss typical concerns of Confederate soldier, including lack of clothing, food, or tents, and enduring long marches; letters include frequent religious references; places represented include Wilmington, N.C.; Jackson, Miss., ca. May 1863-July 1863; Secessionville, S.C.; August found the regiment camped on Isle of Hope near Savannah, Ga., and glad to be back home; by end of August, Faulkner was in the military hospital in Columbia being treated for chronic diarrhea. The regiment returned to S.C. and worked at fortifying batteries in Charleston and Sullivan's Island areas; letter, 3 May 1864, Faulkner discusses arrival in Tarboro, N.C., where his brigade picked up Northern soldiers of war to escort to Charleston, in which Faulkner reports a discussion with a Federal prisoner re African-American freedmen. Faulkner reached Virginia by late May, camping at Clay's Farm. His bowels were troubling him again, so he spent his time doing provose guard duty at the rear, reporting 31 May 1864, "our pickett line and that of the Enemy is quite close still if we do not shoot at them they will not at us"; the final letter, dated 11 June 1864, was written to his mother; a casualty list printed in the Lancaster Ledger, 22 November 1864, indicates that Faulkner died in Virginia.
